Bystander fallow deer engage in third-party behaviour based on similarities in contestant resource-holding potential

چکیده
Competitive dyadic interactions frequently attract the attention of bystanders that follow and disrupt ongoing contest. The motivation for to engage in such third-party behaviour is considered by several different theoretical approaches; one model argues intervene prevent subordinates from gaining a winner effect, thereby becoming threat individual's dominant status within group. This study investigates role contestant morphology as motivating factor initiating behaviour. We investigated whether two correlates resource-holding potential, prerut body weight antler weight, were associated with rutting male fallow deer, Dama dama . In addition, we examined third factor, reproductive effort (weight loss during rut) was There positive relationship between number times individual males experienced contests. not evident either or loss. 15 صفحه اولFallow deer impacts on Wakatipu beech forest
This study uses data from forty-nine 20 m × 20 m permanent plots measured in 1976, 1982, 1989 and 1997-2002 in Wakatipu Forest, western Otago. We relate changes in red (Nothofagus fusca), silver (Nothofagus menziesii) and mountain beech (Nothofagus solandri var. cliffortioides) forest vegetation to the presence of fallow deer (Dama dama). Vegetation composition is likely to have been altered pr...
متن کاملNo Heterozygote Advantage in Fallow Deer
Effects of inbreeding on individual fitness are of long-standing interest in evolutionary biology and conservation studies. Since estimation of the inbreeding coefficient of a given individual is often impossible in wild populations, some authors have attempted to demonstrate inbreeding depression in such populations by correlating the multi-locus marker heterozygosity of individuals with a tra...
متن کاملAdaptive Lévy Walks in Foraging Fallow Deer
BACKGROUND Lévy flights are random walks, the step lengths of which come from probability distributions with heavy power-law tails, such that clusters of short steps are connected by rare long steps. Lévy walks maximise search efficiency of mobile foragers. Recently, several studies raised some concerns about the reliability of the statistical analysis used in previous analyses. Further, it is ...

We propose an integrated approach to resource management for end-to-end pervasive services, spanning over foundational models, abstract machines, runtime environments and programming languages. Our programme builds upon the extensive body of foundational work on ubiquitous (or global) computing and on existing research on programmable networks, complementing current activities in the EPSRC Prog...
